The Female DJ Dilemma
We don’t know if it’s women’s month that has us all up in our feelings, or if the penny finally dropped sometime during our “song of the week” playlist picks. Whatever the case may be, we’ve been seriously wondering…where are all the female DJ/Producers at? Ok sure, there are a few. But if we’re being honest with one another, there ain’t nearly enough.
Is it that women don’t like the idea of DJing? Is it that they’d much rather prefer to spend their time in nail salons as opposed to the studio? Nah we don’t think so! And besides, who says they can’t do both? In our estimation of things, it’s simply a matter of opportunity. Traditionally, house music has been a boys only club of sorts, where the involvement of women has often been limited to the recording booth and no further. Where existing stereotypes within the industry and society at large have done more to close doors, than to open them.
If it weren’t for the likes of DJ Cndo, Lady Lea, Lupe Fuentes, Anané Vega, Annie Mac & Sam Divine but to name a few, the world may never have gotten to know how ladies do what they do on the decks. And perhaps more importantly, little girls in high schools all across the world may never have known that they too can be successful DJ/Producers. By challenging the norms, defying the odds, and moving the masses with their house sounds, these ladies have schooled the world to their brand of house music, proving that you can be both hella fine & fierce on the decks.
