We listen to their tracks on radio. Follow them on Facebook. Like their pics on Instagram. And retweet their posts on Twitter. But what do we really know about our favourite artists. What are they like as people? What do they do in their spare time? What do they do when they’re on the road? Yeah sure, social media gives us a glimpse every now & again. But sometimes, just sometimes, we wanna know a lil bit more.
Enter the vlog, the Internets solution to the house heads voyeuristic tendencies. For those of you may not know what vlogs are, think of them as homemade videos that aren’t quite that homemade if that makes sense. Videos, that allow us to “keep up” with our favourite DJs Kardashian style if you know what we mean.
You see, the beauty about vlogs is that they give us a brief snapshot into the lives of our favourite artists, allowing us to connect & identify with them on a more intimate level. We get to travel with them, gain insight into their thoughts, and get a closer look at what makes them tick. All in all, it’s a voyeuristic exercise that’s just as rewarding for us the viewer, as it is for the artist.
In an age where staying connected with your fans means the difference between dollars & cents, artists have resorted to different means in order to engage with their audiences. To keep them not only in tune with their music, but also updated with the happenings in their lives. And with YouTube’s content monetisation mechanisms, many artists have been able to cash in, while keeping their fanbases captivated.
