Tropical House Sounds
It ain’t deep enough to be considered Deep House. And it ain’t mellow enough to be considered Lounge. However somewhere in the middle, at the point where these two genres of house music intersect, you’ll find the distinctively sultry sounds of Tropical House.
So, how would one best describe “Tropical House”. Well, many have defined it as “a sub genre of Deep House characterized by laid-back melodies & elements of Dancehall and Balearic House”. In essence, it’s the sound of a holiday – a holiday on a tropical island where every hour is happy hour and the sun never sets. Yep, we think that sufficiently describes it.
And yet, if you were to ask the everyday South African what their favourite Tropical House tune is, they’d most likely stare at you, and then swiftly proceed to laugh at the ridiculous notion of there being such a thing as “Tropical House”. It’s understandable, considering the fact that Tropical House is by all standards a relatively niche movement within the grander scheme of all things house music, or rather, within the grander scheme of the SA house scene. However, that’s not to say that its popularity isn’t on the rise.
In Europe & many other parts of the world, Tropical House is big. How big you may ask? Well, just take a look at Sam Feldt, Autograf & Klingande’s SoundCloud plays. Meanwhile back in SA, many house heads have long been bobbing their heads to the Tropical House sounds of GoodLuck & The Kiffness without even knowing it. Tropical House sounds FYI, that have topped many a music chart across the country. And if the general masses response is anything to go by, we think it’s safe to say that Tropical House is here to stay.
