The Art Of The EP

The Art Of The EP
The EP. The musical morsel that’s long enough to get you excited, yet short enough to get you yearning for more. With the advent of streaming services, the EP in its very essence has taken on a life of its own. Yeah sure they serve a practical purpose, like promoting upcoming gigs, or introducing new artists to the masses, without risking the fallout of putting out an entire album and getting no response. However, if one looks beyond the practicality of an EP, beyond its perceived “safe status” within the minds of many, the EP is probably one of the most powerful means of expression within any house musicians arsenal.

Being a format in which artists can exhibit the multiple facets of their artistry, fans get the chance to gain a brief yet very pungent snapshot of the inner workings of their favourite producers mind. The EP and its 3-7 track format has given producers a means by which they can express themselves within a body of work, without having to labour away for months on end.

However perhaps more importantly, from a creative perspective that is, is the consistency of theme & focus of an EP. Often times, a producer has a crystal clear idea of what auditory journey they’d like to send their listener on. A clarity, that translates oh so well musically, making the limited auditory experience of an EP all the more enjoyable for listeners.

We’ve put together some of our favourite EPs that we just can’t help but experience time and time again. Enjoy!
