On The “DL”

There’s been an ongoing trend happening around the net. A trend that some have taken to, and many others have ignored. Oh no don’t get us wrong or anything, it’s not a secret. And yet, it’s not the type of topic you’re bound to find trending on Twitter. It’s something that DJs & producers are keeping on the “DL”, and the only thing we wanna know is why.
We all know that the music industry is hella confusing. In a world where music sales are declining, new pay to play streaming services are popping up, oh, and lest we forget SoundCloud, everyone except the consumer is baffled about how to make music, make money & live happily ever after. However, in a world where innovate or die is the only key to success, a few DJs have decided to keep things on “Download”. The “Free Download” that is.
When the words “free download” come to mind, one might be inclined to think about a track that’s second rate, unwanted, unworthy of sale on iTunes or Traxsource etc. This my friends, contrary to popular belief couldn’t be further from the truth. Over the past few months, we’ve stumbled upon free downloads that are worthy of being number one on any music chart out there. Free downloads, that feature regularly on playlists and at private parties. Tunes that are so good, they’ll leave you wondering why they weren’t sold in the first place.
We’ll be the first to admit that we absolutely love getting free music, however, we can’t help but wonder if this is the new business model of the future. A business model where producers exchanging free music for subscriptions, likes & follows on social networks. Where the only capital that counts is the amount of people you reach with Tweets & Retweets, as you silently pray that it all translates into the “happily ever after” scenario of more money in the end.
And so, where does this leave us? Should everyone just forgo selling music altogether and attempt to amass as many followers as possible? We really don’t have any answers. As a matter of fact, we just so happen to have more questions than anything else. Well…guess we’re all just gonna have to figure this free downloads, social media, Internet thing out together. However in the meantime, it wouldn’t hurt to listen to a few of our favourite free house tunes from around the net. So go ahead, hit that download button & enjoy!
