The Fresh House Flava compilation albums are arguably some of the most popular, and most loved house music compilations to ever hit South Africa. It’s a compilation series that has helped mold and shape the South African house scene, giving house music lovers a frame of reference from which to understand house music. It’s converted the skeptics and reassured the believers, all while redefining the perceptions of a genre. And the house music evangelist behind all of this…non other than the “Big Dawg” himself, DJ Fresh.
At a time when Kwaito was at its peek, house music was seen as a passing fad, a movement that would soon wither and die in the shadow of its big brother Kwaito. Little did many know that this movement would eventually take on a life of its own, propelling South Africa into the spotlight as one of the house capitals of the world.
The Fresh House Flava compilations brought house to the masses in a way that had never been done before, opening our minds and ears to everything that was house music. For the first time, many South Africans were exposed to Latin house, Afro house, Deep house and Soulful house in all their melodic glory. The compilations introduced us to some of the rock stars of house music such as Monique Bingham, Osunlade, Lisa Shaw, Kerri Chandler, Kings Of Tomorrow and so many more. However, more important than this, they served as a source from which South African house music producers and DJ’s could draw their inspiration from. His albums have provided the templates that a generation would emulate, replicate, and eventually surpass in their attempts to find their own voices.
