GQOM – The Future is Here

GQOM. What is GQOM? Where did it come from, and will it be staying? With its pulsating synths, & banging basslines. It’s a sound that was made for shebeens & slay queens alike. It’s fresh. It’s now. It’s 2018. And from the sound of things, it ain’t going nowhere.

GQOM is to SA what Country Music is to America. An auditory identifier of sorts. Its a sound that drips with the swag of Mzansi without even having to try. Born somewhere in Durban, in a place where house music intersects with Kwaito, GQOM is a natural product of its environment. Anyone who knows anything about Durban knows that it pulsates to the rhythm of its own beat. Far removed from the shimmering streets of Johannesburg & Cape Town, Durban is the place where the masses go to play, where hedonism takes hold of both young and old. Where you’re most likely to hear sounds uninformed by the west. Sounds steeped in culture, made solely to serve the Saturday night needs of the masses. It’s in a place such as this that GQOM came to exist. We can’t really say who its chief architect is, however what we do know for sure is that DJ Maphorisa, Okmalumkoolkat, DJ Tira, DJ Lag, DJ Bongz, Rudeboyz, Babes Wodumo and DJ Cleo are but a few who popularised it. However in the end, it would be Durban’s very own that would come to be its greatest evangelists.

Any which way you look at it, there’s no doubt that 2017 belonged to Distruction Boyz. Almost every radio station in the country had their song on high rotation. Name a club & “Omunye” was played. Ask anyone what the song of the moment was, and their answer was Distruction Boyz’s “Omunye”. But in a country full of artists surfing the GQOM wave, the spotlight was bound to be shared, with DJ Maphorisa’s “Midnight Starring” stealing the show both locally and abroad. Going as far as being played at an NBA Game, where dancers at the Dallas vs Phoenix match entertained the masses to the sounds of GQOM.

So, is GQOM going to replace house music? We really can’t see that happening. However one thing we know for sure is that GQOM is more than a passing fad, more than a phase, and more of a movement that’s bound to still be going far into the future. Don’t believe us? Take a listen to these banging GQOM beats and judge for yourself.
